The recently concluded Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections witnessed a notable surge in the assets of candidates. According to affidavits submitted to the Election Commission, 180 MLAs disclosed an increase in their assets, ranging from 1% to a staggering 1,192% between 2018 and 2023. In contrast, 12 MLAs reported a decline in their assets, varying from -1% to -64%. Dr. Hiralal Alava, a Congress MLA from Manawar (ST) seat, topped the list with a remarkable 1982% increase in assets.

Riches and Declines: Noteworthy Cases

Chetanya Kashyap of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), representing Ratlam city, emerged as the richest MLA in the state, witnessing an increase in wealth from Rs 204 crore in 2018 to Rs 296 crore in 2023. Meanwhile, Kalpana Verma, a Congress MLA from Raigaon (SC), holds the position with the least assets, recording a 139% rise from Rs 14 lakhs in 2018 to Rs 33.65 lakh in 2023.

Economic Disparity in Political Landscape

The data reveals a significant wealth gap among MLAs. The combined assets of the top 10 richest MLAs amount to Rs 1,728.52 crore, nearly equivalent to the total wealth of the other 182 MLAs, which stands at Rs 1,692 crore. The economic dominance of the two major parties, Congress and BJP, is evident, accounting for 98.86% of the total assets owned by MLAs contesting re-election. This wealth distribution highlights the economic landscape’s impact on the political scenario in the state.
