Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections: Congress and BJP Await Results in Close Contest

Assembly Elections 2023

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections have concluded, and both the Congress and the BJP are anticipating the results, which are scheduled to be declared on Sunday. The Congress focused its campaign on highlighting alleged “scams” during the BJP’s nearly two-decade rule, expressing hope for a change in voter sentiment. Senior Congress leaders, including state unit chief Kamal Nath and former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, are confident in their victory, citing strong competition faced by BJP heavyweights.

The Congress, aiming for a stable government, expects to secure between 130-140 seats. Encouragement is drawn from the tough contests faced by BJP leaders who have won multiple times in the past. The party anticipates improved performance in regions where it had minimal representation in 2018, such as Vindhya and Bhopal. Exit polls released on November 30 surprised both Congress and BJP members, with the former dismissing them as a ploy to pressure election officials during vote counting.

In response, Kamal Nath declared in a video message that the “BJP has lost the election” and urged Congress workers to remain focused on their tasks. Meanwhile, the BJP is optimistic about winning due to the perceived development work under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The ‘Ladli Behna Yojana,’ a cash scheme for women, has contributed to the BJP’s positive outlook. BJP President J. P. Nadda’s recent visit to Gwalior and prayers in Datia temple added to the political speculation.
