MP News: A report has revealed that if you live in Madhya Pradesh, your life will be reduced by five years due to air pollution. MP is the tenth most polluted state in India in terms of PM 2.5 concentrations. This worrying data has come to light in the report on Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) of the Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) of the University of Chicago.
MP’s annual average PM 2.5 count in 2021 stood at 52.3. Life expectancy in Madhya Pradesh would increase by 4.6 years if the PM 2.5 count was reduced to WHO level 5, and by 1.2 years if it was reduced to the Indian norm of 40, the study said.
2021 is base year
The report has taken 2021 as the base year. The report states that the PM 2.5 count of MP is higher than Maharashtra. The PM 2.5 concentration in Maharashtra was 41.9, which is much lower than the MP 52.3.
Among the four major cities of MP, Indore and Jabalpur had higher average PM 2.5 concentrations than Bhopal and Gwalior on Wednesday. On Wednesday also, the air quality index of Indore was the highest among the four major cities of the country.
The average PM 2.5 of four major cities was Bhopal- 56, Indore- 59, Gwalior- 53 and Jabalpur- 59, while the average AQI of four major cities was Bhopal- 113, Indore- 115, Gwalior- 85 and Jabalpur- 80. Bhopal stood second after Indore in the air quality index.
Officials said air quality is measured by taking into account the levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), RSPM10 and particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air. Whereas the increase in sulfur dioxide is due to emissions from vehicles. PM 10 dust is caused by construction, including road construction, while PM 2.5 dust is caused by human activity and climatic conditions. Officials said that of the four, PM 2.5 is the most harmful to health as it causes serious lung diseases.
