Maharashtra Election 2024: The political landscape in Maharashtra is charged with excitement as voters in all 288 assembly constituencies head to the polls today for the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024. From the bustling lanes of Mumbai to the vibrant fields of Vidarbha, citizens are making their way to polling booths, determined to shape the future of the state. However, amidst this democratic fervor, a shadow looms over the elections—a controversy involving senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde.
Vinod Tawde Cash Scandal: What Happened?
Just a day before voting began, allegations surfaced against Vinod Tawde, accusing him of distributing cash to sway voters. Leaders from the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) raised these charges, triggering a political storm. Opposition heavyweights like Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut, Sharad Pawar, Rahul Gandhi, and Supriya Sule were quick to seize the opportunity, criticising Tawde and questioning the BJP’s commitment to fair elections.
Vinod Tawde, however, has strongly denied the accusations, labeling them as a baseless conspiracy orchestrated by the opposition to tarnish his reputation. In a media statement, he claimed, “This is a deliberate attempt to malign me and my party just before the elections. The truth will prevail.”
Will the Scandal Affect Voter Turnout?
Despite the controversy, early signs suggest that voter enthusiasm remains intact. By 9 AM, Maharashtra recorded a voter turnout of 6.61%, according to the Election Commission. Whether the allegations against Tawde will influence the electorate’s decision remains to be seen.
In a state where politics often intermingles with public sentiment, such accusations may impact fringe voters. The final verdict on whether this scandal swayed voters will become clear on November 23, when the results are announced.
Bitcoin Scam: A Counter-Allegation Against NCP Leaders
The cash scandal isn’t the only controversy stirring the pot in Maharashtra. Amid the uproar, the BJP countered with allegations of its own. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra accused NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule of being involved in a ₹235 crore bitcoin scam. He claimed the opposition had misused funds and demanded accountability.
Responding to the allegations, Supriya Sule dismissed them as politically motivated lies. She remarked, “These are baseless accusations meant to divert attention from their misdeeds.” This exchange of allegations has added a dramatic twist to the election season, keeping voters on edge.
Voter Turnout Highlights: Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh
While Maharashtra takes center stage, elections are also underway in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, contributing to a politically charged atmosphere across India.
- Jharkhand: Voting is ongoing for 38 assembly seats, with key leaders like Hemant Soren and Babulal Marandi in the fray. The state recorded a voter turnout of 12.71% by 9 AM.
- Uttar Pradesh: Nine assembly constituencies, including Phulpur and Ghaziabad, are voting today. By 9 AM, an average turnout of 9.67% was reported, with Kundarki leading and Ghaziabad trailing in voter participation.
