Maharastra: In order to avoid a blame of over 31 deaths in 72 hours at a hospital in Nanded, the Maharashtra government is all set to blame the nearby private healthcare facilities that were closed for the holiday weekend, insiders have told reporters.
After noting the significant number of fatalities at the government-run hospital, the Bombay High Court requested a comprehensive answer from the Eknath Shinde administration. Additionally, it had been noted that the healthcare facilities were experiencing an intolerable scarcity of employees, beds, and medications.
Maharashtra government is expected to explain court
The Maharashtra government is anticipated to explain the court that due to continuous holidays, there was a staffing deficit in private hospitals near to Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and the hospital in Nanded, as per the reports.
According to the state government, the private hospitals referred serious cases—many of them newborns—to the public hospital, which led to an increase in the number of fatalities at the Nanded facility.
According to reports, the state government would probably claim in its affidavit that at least 10 of the baby deaths reported at the Nanded hospital were caused by private healthcare facilities.
State government’s legal strategy
Hasan Mashrif, the minister of medical education, said in a statement to the media about the state government’s legal strategy: “Ten of the newborns who died had been taken (to the state-run hospital) from private facilities. And when they were brought in, they were in a pretty bad state.
The minister said that a committee had been established by the state government, and each death had been audited. He declared, “We will present all of these matters to the court.”
There was no lack of medicines or medical personnel at the Nanded hospital, according to the Eknath Shinde-led administration.
Pigs were spotted
However, reports from the ground have painted a different picture. Pigs were spotted wandering about the hospital grounds, and plastic bottle debris choked the drains. Family members of hospital patients who passed away claimed they had to buy the medicines from outside and that no senior doctor was caring for them.
Following claims from the newborn’s relative that the baby died as a result of negligence, the hospital dean and another doctor have been accused in a case of culpable homicide.
The acting dean, Dr. SR Wakode, had already filed a police report against Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil for pressuring him to clean a filthy toilet at the hospital.
SC ST Act
Mr Patil was seen in viral videos asking the dean to clean the lavatory. The Nanded MP is currently facing charges under the IPC’s defamation, criminal intimidation, and using criminal force to prevent a public worker from performing his duties sections. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act’s relevant sections were also used to charge the MP.
