Glorification of Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan Sparks Protests and Clashes in Kolhapur and Sangamner
Due to allegations that Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan were glorified, racial animosity has arisen in a number of Maharashtrian cities. Protests have broken out in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in response to a social media post that some claim glorifies Aurangzeb and disrespects a national symbol of the Maratha people. On June 7, members of various right-wing organisations in the city demanded a Kolhapur bandh, which swiftly turned into violent protests. “We won’t stand for the veneration of Mughal rulers on our Maratha territory. To defend Hindu society, we are prepared to draw our swords. This will not be accepted,” a confrontational demonstrator yelled. Stones were thrown during a Sakal Hindu Samaj rally in Sangamner town in protest of the reported death of a boy. Five automobiles were harmed, and two people were hurt. Separately, during a religious procession in Sangamner, police reported that a poster of Aurangzeb was displayed along with the yelling of offensive chants.
