Mahua Moitra: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has ignited a controversy with a crude remark against National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma. The row erupted after Moitra commented on a video showing Sharma’s arrival at the site of the Hathras stampede, where a man was seen holding an umbrella over her. The video, shared on social media platform X, included a user questioning why Sharma could not carry her own umbrella.
Moitra responded to the tweet with a derogatory comment, saying, “She (Rekha Sharma) is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.” This sparked a sharp reaction from the NCW, which called for an FIR against Moitra.

“The National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of the derogatory remark made by Mahua Moitra, Member of Parliament, against Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, NCW. The crude remarks are outrageous and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity,” the NCW stated. “An FIR should be registered against Mahua Moitra and a detailed action report should be communicated to the Commission within 3 days.”
In response, Moitra challenged the Delhi Police to take immediate action against her. “Come on, Delhi Police; please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. (I) am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest,” she tweeted. Moitra also added, “I can hold my own umbrella.”
Adding to the controversy, a BJP leader shared a photo of Mahua Moitra with someone holding an umbrella over her, countering her remark. The incident has sparked a heated debate, with both sides trading barbs over the issue.
As the controversy continues, the political and public reactions are being closely watched, with many awaiting the next steps from the authorities and the involved parties.
