Manipur Violence: Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led government over the ongoing crisis in Manipur. In a scathing tweet, Kharge accused the BJP of deliberately fueling the unrest in the northeastern state to further its divisive political agenda. His remarks come amidst escalating violence and growing public outrage in Manipur, which has been grappling with severe tensions since May 2023.
Mallikarjun Kharge’s Sharp Criticism of PM Modi
In his tweet, Kharge did not hold back, stating that under PM Modi‘s “double-engine government,” Manipur has been plunged into chaos. He lamented that the state has lost its unity and safety, enduring immense pain and violence that has shattered the lives of its people.
Kharge further accused the BJP of exploiting the turmoil for political gain, stating, “We are saying it with utmost responsibility that it looks like the BJP deliberately wants Manipur to burn, for it serves its hateful divisive politics.” He highlighted the tragic loss of at least 17 lives since November 7 and criticised PM Modi for not visiting Manipur to address the crisis.
Violence Erupts in Manipur: Protesters Target Leaders’ Homes
The unrest in Manipur escalated recently when protesters ransacked the homes of three ministers and six MLAs. Among the properties attacked was the residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s son-in-law, which was set ablaze. The violent protests were triggered by the discovery of six missing persons’ bodies, further igniting public anger.
Jiribam, one of the affected regions, saw intense clashes, prompting the imposition of prohibitory orders in five districts and the suspension of internet services in parts of the state. Security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters attempting to storm CM Biren Singh’s house in Imphal.
Calls for Withdrawal of AFSPA
Amid the turmoil, the state government has appealed to the Centre to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which had been reintroduced in parts of Manipur earlier. This contentious law grants sweeping powers to the armed forces in “disturbed areas” and has long been criticised by civil rights groups.
A consortium of Meitei groups echoed the demand, highlighting the growing frustration among communities over the government’s handling of the crisis.
