West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced her concerns on Monday, suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might potentially advance the Lok Sabha elections to December. She asserted that the BJP had reportedly reserved all available helicopters for its election campaign, implying a strategic move. Speaking at a TMC youth wing rally, Banerjee cautioned that if the BJP were to secure a third term in power, the country could face a rule characterized by autocracy.
“If BJP returns to power for the third consecutive term, the nation would face an autocratic rule. I am apprehensive that they (BJP) could hold the Lok Sabha elections in December itself or in January next year,” she said.
Banerjee also took the opportunity to address recent incidents of illegal firecracker factory explosions in the state, placing blame on individuals involved in unlawful activities and alleging some level of support from certain members of the police force.
“The saffron party has already turned our country into a nation in the throes of animosity among communities. If they return to power, it will make our country a nation of hatred,” she said.
The general elections are due in 2024
Although the general elections are scheduled for 2024, Banerjee claimed that the BJP had already pre-booked all helicopters for campaigning purposes. This strategic move, she suggested, aimed to prevent other political parties from utilizing helicopters for their own canvassing efforts.
Turning her attention to a recent tragedy, Banerjee addressed a deadly explosion that occurred at an unauthorized firecracker factory in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, resulting in the loss of nine lives.vpq
CM said: “Some people are engaged in illegal activities, and a few police personnel are supporting this.”
“The majority of policemen are doing their duty with utmost sincerity, but some are helping such people. They must remember that just like the anti-ragging cell, we also have an anti-corruption cell in Bengal.”
Encouraging a more environmentally conscious approach, Banerjee urged those engaged in the firecracker industry to shift their production towards manufacturing “green” firecrackers.
Reflecting on her political achievements, Banerjee highlighted her success in ending the three-decade-long rule of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in West Bengal. She expressed determination to continue her political journey by challenging and defeating the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“Don’t take ‘panga’ (challenge) with an elected government,” the chief minister said.
