Manipur violence: Despite widespread rumours that he could quit today, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh will meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey at 3 o’clock. The development occurs while racial tensions and violence in the state, which have been escalating for almost two months, remain high. According to the sources, he was informed that he could either resign or the Centre would take control. A group of ladies gathered outside the Raj Bhavan and secretariat of the Manipur Chief Minister, pleading with Biren Singh not to step down. As the state’s law and order situation worsens due to ethnic violence, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh is expected to resign on Friday. On Friday at 1 pm, he is anticipated to deliver his resignation to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey. According to sources, the Centre offered Chief Minister Biren Singh the choice of submitting his paper or letting them take over. In response to these reports, a group of ladies gathered outside the offices of the Manipur chief minister and Raj Bhavan on Friday, pleading with Singh not to step down. Instead, according to news source PTI, they requested that the chief minister “take a firm stand against the troublemakers.”
Calls for Central intervention intensify
Three individuals were murdered in a shooting that took place on Thursday between security personnel and suspected rioters in a recent violent event in Manipur. Political parties and protesters have been vocally calling for the Centre to intervene in Manipur for several weeks. After losing trust in the chief minister, members of Manipur’s Kuki community petitioned the Central government to restore normality there a month ago. Nine BJP lawmakers from Manipur wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June expressing their disappointment with the N Biren Singh-led government.
Ethnic tensions escalate in Manipur as death toll surpasses 100
Over 100 people have already died as a result of the current ethnic tensions in Manipur between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Following the planning of a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill areas on May 3, violence first broke out. The Meitei community had requested Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, but the tribal Kuki tribe had fiercely opposed this. The march was in response to this. Since then, the conflicts between the two groups have gotten worse.
