Manipur Violence: In the wake of a reported firing incident in Manipur’s Tengnoupal, the Assam Rifles launched an operation, resulting in the recovery of 13 bodies in the district. The victims’ identities remain unknown.
Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo tribal groups welcomed a recent ‘Peace Agreement’ between the Indian government and the Meitei militant faction, UNLF (Pambei), on December 3.
Internet service restored:
Amid ongoing violence, the Manipur government restored mobile internet services across the state, excluding specific areas, until December 18. Despite the relaxation, mobile towers within a 2 km radius of several district boundaries, including Chandel and Kakching, Churachandpur and Bishnupur, Kangpokpi and Imphal West, among others, will continue to face suspended operations.
Manipur Violence:
The state has experienced recurrent violence since May, with over 180 casualties. The clashes stem from various grievances, notably the contentious move to grant Meiteis Scheduled Tribe status, subsequently rolled back, and efforts to relocate tribals residing in protected forest areas. Manipur’s population comprises Meiteis (53%) predominantly in the Imphal valley, and tribals (40%), including Nagas and Kukis, residing mainly in hill districts.
