Manipur Violence: On Friday night, when one of the five defence volunteers who had been released on bail by a special court in Imphal earlier in the day was re-arrested by a central security agency, officials said, further confrontations broke out between security forces and demonstrators in several areas of Imphal West. Official confirmation of the youth’s status, however, was not available, they noted.
Tensions Escalate in Manipur
According to them, Moirangthem Anand, a former member of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army, has been re-arrested while the other four arrested men were turned over to their families after being granted bail. As she sobbed in front of the Imphal police station, Anand’s wife said, “I have been told by police that my husband has been arrested in connection with a previous case which is more than 10 years old.” Four of us were released from the lock-up, but Anand was taken away by a few officials, according to L Michael, one of the freed village defence force volunteers. We last saw him at that point. In the Imphal West district, in Kwakeithel stretch, Singjamei, and Uripok, security forces, including RAF members, shot numerous rounds of tear gas shells to disperse protesters. Tyres were set ablaze in the middle of the road by protesters as a form of resistance to the government and police.
Former Rebel Re-Arrested After Bail
The five individuals were granted bail by an Imphal special court earlier in the day in exchange for a PR bond in the amount of Rs. 50,000. When they detained Anand and four others on September 16 near Kongba in Imphal East district, police found one INSAS gun and 78 rounds of ammo on him. After protesters attempted to storm police stations as part of a “court arrest agitation” demanding the unconditional release of the five village defence volunteers, there were many skirmishes between security forces and protesters on Thursday in Manipur.
