Manipur Government Temporarily Suspends Internet and Mobile Data for Five Days Amid Law and Order Concerns

According to the order issued by the Manipur Secretariat’s Home Department, there is a risk that anti-social elements may exploit social media platforms to circulate inflammatory content, including hate speech and videos, that could incite public unrest. The authorities fear that the transmission of such material may lead to serious disturbances, damage to property, and a breakdown of communal harmony.

The suspension extends to all internet services, including mobile data, lease lines, broadband, and VPN services, except for those specifically exempted or whitelisted by the state government. The order, issued under Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, aims to prevent the mobilization of agitators through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter.

The state government emphasized that the measure is intended to maintain public safety

The state government emphasized that the measure is intended to maintain public safety, communal harmony, and prevent any loss of life or damage to private or public property. The suspension comes at a time when the state is facing heightened tensions, and the administration seeks to prevent any further escalation of violence.

The government will review the situation over the next five days, and further steps will be taken based on the evolving circumstances.
