Manipur Violence: The northeastern state of Manipur continues to experience mob violence in wake of Kuki and Meitei ethnic clash. The private godown of Manipur minister, L Susindro was set ablaze in Imphal East district. As per a report by PTI, the property has been reduced to ashes. Attempts were also made to burn another property of Susindro at Khurai but Manipur Police was able to repel the attack after firing several rounds of tear gas. No casualties have been reported in the violence, as per police. This is not the first instance of a Minister property being burned down by a mob. On June 14, official quarters of the minister Nemcha Kipgen was set on fire. In another attack, attempts were made to burn a house belonging to Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh the following day.

Since the protest on May 3, a large number of houses have been burned leaving many people homeless. On Friday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh did a inspection of sites for the establishment of pre-fabricated homes for people displaced by the violent conflict. “The affected families will be temporarily housed in the classrooms and hostels of the Sericulture Training Institute campus at Kwakta. Around 500 pre-fabricated homes would be set up inside the campus.” Pre- fabricated houses are ready-made structures, constructed off site and assembled at the places where homes will be set up.
Conflict in Manipur
More than 100 people have lost their lives in violence that ensued after the Tribal Solidarity March was organized by Hill Districts against demand of Scheduled Castes(ST) status by Meitei community. The Meitei community has demanded the implementation of National Registrar of Citizens(NRC) while the Kuki community has demanded a separate state, Kukiland. On may 29, Union Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah visited the violence struck state in an attempt to hold meetings with all concerned parties. He also urged civil society groups to help in reaching a consensus on the issue. On Friday,140 firearms were surrendered to the state police. Amit Shah also called for an all party meeting on June 24 to discuss the situation in the state.
