Manipur Violence: Since May 3 more than 150 people have died in the ethnic conflict between Kuki and Meitei tribes in Manipur. During overnight clashes on Sunday in state’s west Kangpokpi region a policeman was killed while 10 people were left injured after firing in Phayeng and Singda villages. Additional troops from Assam Rifles troops were called to bring the situation under control bringing cessation of fire by the early hours of July 10.
Ethnic clash on rise
After the situation was brought under control, the Assam Rifles created a buffer zone between both the villages. There was subsequent unprovoked firing from Singda village in the morning again. The firing was aimed towards specifically towards the hill side of west Kangokpi. There are reports of more casualties on both sides while the Army and police authorities are conducting search operations in the area.
As a result of violence Manipur is now effectively divided into two ethnic zones with valley and lowlands in control of Meitei and hills controlled by the Kukis.
‘We are not running security, law and order there‘
A SC bench comprising of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha has stated that the Supreme Court cannot be used as a platform to escalate further tensions between ethnic groups in Manipur. They further said that only directions can be given authorities to make situation biter made based on suggestions made by different stakeholders.
“We have to be conscious of the fact that we are not running security, law and order there,” the CJI said. He asked advocate representing Kuki side to make some suggestions which will then be forwarded to Central and state government.
