Manipur violence: After riots broke out on May 3 during a demonstration by tribals against a court decision on Scheduled Tribe designation, the situation in Manipur is still tense. Following the ATSUM solidarity march on May 3, which caused new tensions throughout the state, protesting crowds set fire to cars, homes, schools, churches, and commercial structures. According to the DGP of Manipur, ‘when security personnel got involved, the situation in the state got better.’ According to sources speaking to news agency PTI, ‘the violence that erupted in Manipur has claimed up to 54 lives.’

An armed assailant killed a CRPF CoBRA commando

‘The government is taking all feasible actions,’ according to Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, who stated on Saturday that the violence that broke out in Manipur is’very regrettable’. According to authorities, ‘an armed assailant shot and killed a CRPF CoBRA commando who was on leave in his village in the Churachandpur district of Manipur on Friday. Following the death of constable Chonkholen Haokip, the CRPF on Friday ordered all Manipur-native employees who were on leave in their home state to “immediately” return to the closest security base with their families.’

13000 peoples were saved and taken to safe shelters

According to a representative for the Defence, 13,000 individuals in all were saved and taken to safe shelters. On Friday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other top officials met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation in Manipur. According to sources, the Centre sent out more security personnel and anti-riot vehicles to keep the peace in the violent environment.
