Manipuri Viral Video: On Monday, the Supreme Court stated that it was dealing with a “unprecedented magnitude” of violence against women in communal and sectarian strife when hearing the Manipur viral video case. We cannot excuse what occurred in Manipur, according to CJI Chandrachud, “by saying that this and this happened elsewhere.” “We are dealing with an unprecedented magnitude of violence against women in communal and sectarian strife. We cannot justify what happened in Manipur by saying that this and this happened elsewhere. Are you saying protect all women or don’t protect anyone?” the CJI said. Following the assertion by attorney Bansuri Swaraj that West Bengal and Rajasthan experienced comparable occurrences to those in Manipur, the CJI responded. According to Swaraj, a video of a panchayat election contestant in Bengal being stripped and displayed naked went viral.
Women Paraded Naked in Manipur File Appeal with Supreme Court
In response to the widely shared video of their trauma, the women who were paraded naked and subjected to sexual abuse in Manipur have filed a new appeal with the Supreme Court. Along with their request for identity protection, the survivors have submitted a supplementary application in connection with the FIR for the sexual assault incident that happened on May 4. The development occurs today, July 31, as the bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud prepares to read the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA’s) response.
Unraveling the Truth in the Manipur Tragedy
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken up the investigation of the two women who were paraded in Manipur naked, the home ministry informed the Supreme Court last week. The CBI has officially assumed control of the investigation and filed a FIR. The MHA also sought the top court to relocate the trial in the matter outside of Manipur so that it may be finished within a set amount of time in an affidavit submitted through its Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla. So far, seven persons have been taken into custody in this investigation.
Viral Video Sparks National Outrage
A video of the incident went viral online, bringing attention to the two women’s sexual assault on June 19. At the Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district, authorities had reported a case of kidnapping, gangrape, and murder. Seven people had been detained in connection with the crime. The top court took notice of the incident on July 20 and stated that it was “deeply disturbed” by the video and that using women as tools to commit violence was “simply unacceptable in a constitutional democracy”. CJI Chandrachud has ordered the federal government and the government of Manipur to take prompt corrective, restorative, and preventive action and to report their progress to the top court.
