Mayawati pitches in favour of UCC implementation but ‘not the BJP way,’ details

Mayawati has said ‘Not against UCC, but don’t support how BJP is trying to implement it."

UCC: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party National President Mayawati has said that her party is not against implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. “The Uniform Civil Code is already mentioned in the constitution. But the constitution does not support imposing it. The BJP should have considered all the dimensions related to UCC,” said Mayawati. She also added that it is not right for BJP to politicize the issue of UCC and forcefully implement the decision.

She further stated that UCC will unite the country in brotherhood and rather than forcing this issue, government should prioritize issue like unemployment, education, infaltion and healthcare.

“The implementation of UCC will strengthen the country and unite Indians. It will also develop a sense of brotherhood among people. The forceful implementation of UCC is not right… The government should currently focus on issues like inflation, unemployment, education and healthcare.” said the BSP chief.

PM Modi’s push for UCC

During an event in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday PM Modi pushed for implementation of Uniform Civil Code by asserting case of discrimination against Muslims Women in personal laws.

He also reminded that Supreme Court has pushed for its adoption and attacked opposition for politicizing the issue. PM had said PM Modi said “Will a family function if there are two different sets of rules for people? Then how will a country run? Our Constitution too guarantees equal rights to all people. Even the Supreme Court is pushing for common civil code. But these vote-hungry people are misleading,”

Recently Uttarakhand under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has drafted its own version of Uniform Civil Code. The draft was made by a panel of 5 members appointed last year by the state government. Head of the committee Justice Ranjana Desai said “We’ve tried to bring everyone on an equal footing with elimination of arbitrariness and discrimination.” She also added that if the draft is implemented it will strengthen secular fabric of the nation.

Parties gear up for Parliamentary Standing Committee

After Modi’s initial statements over UCC, AAP national general secretary Sandeep Pathak had said, “We support Uniform Civil Code in principle. Article 44 also says there should be UCC in the country.” He also added there should be a consensus among all stakeholders, He also advised BJP government to not take authoritative stance over implementation of UCC.

During Congress’s Parliamentary Strategy Group held a meeting on Saturday, it was agreed that the party will not be opposing reforms in significant matters like inheritance rights. The Congress will wait for BJP’s next move before putting out its own draft. Still, the party maintains that implementation of UCC could seriously be an assault on country’s diversity.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee discussion on the Uniform Civil Code is scheduled for July 3.
