Meghalaya: Five Meghalayan MLAs have offered their resignations and are preparing to join the United Democratic Party in advance of the Election Commission’s announcement of the dates for the assembly elections in Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
MLAs who have submitted their resignation
Renikton Lyngdoh Tonghar, a cabinet minister and HSPDP MLA, Shitlang Pale, a Trinamool Congress MLA, Mayralborn Syiem and PT Sawkmie, two suspended Congress members, and independent MLA Lambor Malngiang are among the MLAs who have submitted their resignations. As a result, there are now no MLAs for the Congress or the HSPDP in the state.
In the midst of political defections and lawmaker resignations, 18 MLAs have resigned from the 11th Meghalaya Assembly. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) administration is led by six parties, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of those parties, has already declared that it will run alone in this year’s assembly elections.
Meghalaya Assembly’s tenure will come to end on 15th March
The National People’s Party (NPP), which will again run unopposed, said on Sunday that it may surpass the halfway point in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly. On March 15, the Meghalaya Assembly’s five-year tenure will come to an end. Election commission is going to announce the dates for the election soon enough.
Resignation by the notable MLAs just prior to the election can prove to be game-changing. According to prior reports, the three states’ election schedules will be planned with board exams and the movement of security personnel in mind.
