Madhya Pradesh govt drops Everest climber Megha Parmar as ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ ambassador after she joins Congress

Megha Parmar: Madhya Pradesh government dropped mountaineer Megha Parmar as state ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme on May 10. The action was taken after she joined the Congress party.

Megha is the first woman from Madhya Pradesh to scale the Mount Everest summit. On May 9 she joined the Congress party at an event in Chhindwara. She joined the grand old party in the presence of the Madhya Pradesh Congress chief and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

Removed as ambassador

A day later on May 10, the Department for Women and Child Development dropped Megha as the state ambassador for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme.

And then five days later on May 15, her name was also dropped as the ambassador of the state dairy brand Sanchi.

Following the development, Congress lashed out at the BJP, alleging that the latter discharged Megha from the role of ambassador only because she joined the Congress.

“Megha Parmar, who made the country proud, was dropped as the ambassador of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ as her only crime was joining Congress,” said the party leader KK Mishra.

Kamal Nath helped Mehga

Speaking on being discharged from her current responsibility as ambassador, Megha Parmar said, “For the BJP, Beti Bachao has become Beti Hatao”. I am a farmer’s daughter. I couldn’t have imagined conquering the world’s highest peak. Kamal Nath helped me a lot. He gave me financial assistance. As a result, I was able to conquer the world’s highest peak. Instead of film actresses, Kamal Nath made the farmer’s daughter a brand ambassador of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign. But the BJP government, which talks big about women’s respect, removed the same farmer’s daughter as the brand ambassador,” said Megha Parmar.

She added, “The claims being made by the BJP regarding women’s empowerment today stand exposed. The action of the Shivraj government has not only insulted me but has demeaned women’s empowerment.”

The state government is yet to respond to the allegations levelled by Megha Parmar and the Congress party.

Megha became the first woman from Madhya Pradesh to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 22, 2019.
