MP News: In Madhya Pradesh‘s Sagar area, a Dalit kid was allegedly killed by a mob of hundreds after his sister reported him for sexual harassment in 2019. When his mother attempted to protect her son from the attackers, she was stripped naked and was also beaten along with his sister. Three persons will be tried under the strict Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes Act, while nine people have been charged with murder. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Uikey, eight persons have been detained. The sister of the 18-year-old victim claimed that some individuals were pressing her to drop her case, which prompted the attack on them.
Stripped and Abused Amidst the Chaos
“They thrashed him a lot. He couldn’t survive. Hume beparda kar diya. I was stripped. Then the cops arrived and I was handed a towel. I stood there in a towel until they got me a saree,” said the young man’s mother. She claimed that the crowd also destroyed and looted their house. “None of the household items are left intact. Even the pucca roofs were broken,” she wept. When they couldn’t find her other two sons, they headed to another house. According to the victim’s aunt, a mob broke into her home as well and threatened to harm her family. “They also would have killed my husband and children. They even looked in our refrigerator, she insisted. Heavy police presence has been deployed since the incident, and the atmosphere in the village is still tense. After the district collector guaranteed them of assistance through government programmes and notified them of the arrests, the victim’s family carried out his funeral rites, according to the police. The victim’s sister had filed a lawsuit in 2019 against four males, claiming they had threatened and physically assaulted her. According to the police, all four were detained in connection with the current legal dispute.
Episode Sparks Controversy Amidst Upcoming Elections in Madhya Pradesh
The episode set off a political controversy in Madhya Pradesh, which is preparing for elections, with the opposition Congress and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party criticising the BJP administration. The ruling party claimed that swift action had been taken and accused the Congress of treating crimes with partiality. In Madhya Pradesh, which is scheduled to hold elections this yearend, the Congress head Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that tribal and Dalit oppression persisted unabatedly. He asserted that the state has the largest number of crimes committed against Dalits and that “the BJP has made Madhya Pradesh a laboratory of Dalit atrocities.” Kamal Nath, the head of the state Congress, demanded financial support for the victim’s family and asserted that the accused had ties to the BJP. Minister for Madhya Pradesh Bhupendra Singh refuted the accusations, saying the crime was a result of a quarrel. He charged that the issue had been politicised by the Congress. Rajneesh Agrawal, state BJP secretary, told PTI that his party’s government responded quickly to the matter but Congress governments in places they controlled didn’t even bother to act when Dalit atrocities occurred.
