Uttarakhand News: Muslim community members protested here on Thursday, claiming that their businesses in the Kamaluaganja district of Uttarakhand had been forcibly shut down and that they had been told to leave or face the consequences. In addition, the demonstrators demanded the release of a man accused of being bisexual in a statement they delivered to the senior superintendent of police, asking for protection for minorities.
Muslim-Owned Businesses Suffer in Buddha Park
They asserted that over the previous week, their stores in the Buddha Park neighbourhood on the town’s outskirts had been targeted. Additionally, they said that Nafis was detained on June 14 after being accused of engaging in bistillity by some locals. They stated that the people beat up Nafis and shaved his head. In accordance with the IPC and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the police detained Nafis. Later, he was detained. The event had caused unrest in the Kamaluaganja neighbourhood beneath the Mukhani police station, where individuals are accused of damaging some Muslim-owned businesses and forcing them to close. According to police authorities in Haldwani and Nainital, 50 to 60 unidentified individuals have been booked under several IPC sections, including 147 (rioting), 355 (assault), and 323 (voluntarily inflicting harm), in connection with the damage. They said that no arrests have been made. SP (City), Haldwani, Harbans Singh stated that “additional police deployments had been made in the area immediately after the incident on June 14 and the situation is well within control now.”

Muslim Community Denounces Injustice in Nafis’s Case
The demonstrators claimed Nafis was innocent and that he had gone to a villager to inquire for his dues when he was wrongly accused and beaten up by the people, who they claimed were supported by the party in power. This is according to the memorandum that was given to the police. Members of the Muslim community also claimed that Nafis was detained by the police without them having looked into the accusations made against him. “There is no law and order in Kamaluaganja, and the morale of the ‘anti-social’ elements is high,” the memo stated. “Article 19 of the Constitution gives all citizens the right to live, settle and do their businesses in any part of the country, but this constitutional provision is being violated openly in Kamaluaganja,” it said.

Protesters Demand Nafis’s Release and Action Against Hate Speech
The demonstrators said that even the Supreme Court had determined that police should act unilaterally against people responsible for hate speech. Nafis’s immediate release was sought, and FIRs were filed against those who had shaved his head, assaulted him, and forced Muslim-owned businesses to close. Additionally, they threatened to stage another protest in Buddha Park on July 2 if their demands were not met right away. The tension in Kamaluaganja and the growing unease within the minority community follow a similar incident in Uttarkashi, a Purola town, where posters appeared on Muslim-owned businesses warning them to leave or face the consequences.
