Nagpur Deluge Claims 4 Lives Including a Paralyzed Woman, Sparks Orange Alert Amid Heavy Rainfall

Nagpur News: Four people, including a 53-year-old lady who was paralysed and bedridden, died as a result of floods in Nagpur following heavy rains, police said on Saturday. Late in the evening, Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, declared that the deceased’s relatives will receive compensation of Rs. 4 lakh each.

Floodwaters Engulf Sandhya Dhore’s Home

In the first incident, flood water flooded Sandhya Dhore and her mother Sayabai Dhore’s (72) home in Surendragadh, and although family members were able to save the latter, the former was left behind since she was unable to be moved from her bed, an official said. “Sandhya Dhore drowned after the water level in the room increased. A rescue team found her body this morning,” he said. According to him, water entered Meerabai Kappuswamy’s Gittikhadan residence at 2 a.m. and she died as a result. Her body was discovered by family members at 6 a.m.

Unidentified Body Found in ‘Nullah’ Near Panchsheel Square

An unidentified body was discovered on Saturday night in a “nullah” (large drain) close to Panchsheel Square within the boundaries of the Dhantoli police station, the official reported. Sanjay Shankar Gadegaokar, a 52-year-old tea vendor from Ayodhya Nagar, was the fourth fatality. He drowned around 3 am in a flooded trench on the grounds of the Government Medical College and Hospital. “He had come to visit a kin at GMCH. An accidental death case has been registered by Ajni police,” the official informed. After many hours of intense rain caused many areas of Nagpur city to flood, more than 400 people were rescued, including 70 children from a school for the deaf and hard of hearing. After the city received roughly 90 mm of rain between 2 and 4 am on Saturday, water flowed into homes and residential areas, and the streets appeared to be rivers. A 24-hour orange alert has been issued by the weather service for the district. As a precaution, the administration has proclaimed a holiday for schools and institutions.
