New office timings: The recent implementation of new office timings by the Punjab government has started showing positive results in Mohali. From the first day itself the effects of new office timings was apparent, making traffic management easier, according to sources.
The Punjab government on April 8 announced new office timings for state government officials starting May 2. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the working hours for government officials would be from 7.30 am to 2 pm. These new timings will remain in place until July 15, he said.
Study reveals less traffic congestion
The decision started showing positive results soon. A study conducted by the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre has revealed a significant reduction in traffic congestion on Airport Road. It has become possible due to the different office hours for government and private offices.
Dr Navdeep Asija, the Director of Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, told mediapersons that the results were evident in real-time data. The change in timings divided the rush into two slots, reducing traffic chaos during morning and evening peak hours, Dr Asija said.
He further explained that previously, with both public and private offices closing after 5 pm, the traffic load was substantial, resulting in long traffic jams and congestion. However, the revised office timings for public offices have staggered the traffic, leading to smoother traffic flow.
Decline in accidents
The timing changes have not only reduced traffic congestion but also resulted in a decline in accidents along the 18 km stretch of Airport Road in Mohali.
Dr Asija said that this particular 18 km stretch used to experience lighter traffic in the afternoon hours. As the traffic was less, people indulged in over speeding which often led to accidents. However, the new office timings have eliminated the risks associated with over speeding, he said.
Additionally, Dr Asija stated that the changr in official timings has also brought about various other positive changes, including reduced traffic chaos, decreased fuel consumption, and a cleaner environment.
