Nipah virus cases: Since Kozhikode, Kerala, reported another case of the Nipah virus on Friday, the state administration has declared holidays for the district’s educational institutions through September 24. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 20 extra vials of antibody vaccinations will be purchased by India to treat the infected.

After a 39-year-old man’s sample tested positive on Friday, one more Nipah virus infection case was verified in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, bringing the total number of cases to six. After two persons died as a result of the virus, there are currently four active cases.

Safety guidelines in Karnataka

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old healthcare worker became Kerala’s sixth officially recognised Nipah patient since its recent epidemic. Since the outbreak, Kerala has sent out numerous alerts. The rise in overall numbers prompted neighbouring Karnataka to issue advisory too.

Spreads from humans

The Nipah virus strain found in Kerala spreads from human. variant of the Bangladesh strain that has a high fatality rate despite having a decreased infectivity. The virus has a fatality rate of up to 75% among those afflicted, has no vaccination, and spreads through contact with the body fluids of infected bats, pigs, or humans.

The viral infection has already been identified in the state four times. In Kozhikode, it was found in 2018 and 2021, while in Ernakulam, it was found in 2019.
