Nitin Gadkari Hits Back; Dismissing Auditor’s Allegation of Fund Mismanagement in Dwarka Expressway Project

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, refuted the assertion that Rs 250 crore was spent per km in his response to an audit report on the “huge funding mismanagement” of the Dwarka Expressway project on Saturday. A political controversy recently broke up over the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that highlighted the excessive expense of building the Dwarka Motorway. The article claims that the 29.06 km long motorway is being built at an outrageous cost of Rs 250.77 crore per kilometre, above the Rs 18.2 crore per kilometre that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had approved.

Gadkari’s Clarification on Dwarka Motorway’s Length and Tunnels

Nitin Gadkari disputed claims that the “high cost of construction” was an issue by claiming that the Dwarka Motorway was actually much longer than the CAG report’s 29-kilometer estimate because it also featured tunnels. According to this, he claimed, Rs 9.5 crore was spent every kilometre. Gadkari asserted that after explaining the situation to CAG authorities, they were “convinced” by his explanation. He claimed that despite this, they nevertheless published the report.

Nitin Gadkari Credits BJP as the Architect

Nitin Gadkari stated that the “BJP is the architect of opposition unity” in response to a question regarding the opposition coalition in India. “Those whose ideologies never aligned, those who never saw each others’ faces, those who never drank tea together – now they are coming together to fight us (BJP),” he said. Gadkari stated that the Opposition came together as a result of the BJP‘s influence. Speaking of planned initiatives, Gadkari disclosed intentions to construct a motorway linking Kashmir and Kanyakumari. He stated during his speech at the ceremony that the government intended to build an access control road to link Kashmir and Kanyakumari. He added that the Delhi-Mumbai Motorway would probably be finished by January or February of the next year.
