The usually serene Yamuna River has become a source of worry as water levels at Noida’s Okhla Barrage see a rise of 1.85 metres, bringing it dangerously close to the alert threshold. The local administration has consequently issued a warning to residents in nearby areas.
Yamuna Levels Spike: An Alarm for the Administration
Officials from the irrigation department noted a significant increase in the Yamuna River’s water levels at Okhla Barrage on Wednesday. With the river’s level just 0.75 metres shy of the danger mark, the district administration is on high alert.
District Administration’s Prompt Response
Even though the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department has not yet issued an alert for areas susceptible to flooding, the district administration has taken a proactive step. They have urged residents living in close proximity to the floodplains to prepare for possible relocation to safer areas.
District-wide Alert: Precautions in Place
The Gautam Budh Nagar administration has issued a district-wide alert, especially for villages situated near the floodplains. Over 50 villages, home to approximately 50,000 people, have been alerted to the potential risk. A flood control room has also been established, complete with helpline numbers, to assist residents if relocation becomes necessary.
Rescue Operations Underway: Cattle Evacuated
As a precautionary measure, the district fire department has rescued more than 300 cattle from private cowsheds in the floodplains of Chaprauli and Mangrauli villages in Sector 168, Noida. Rescue operations continue, with efforts to save about 80 more cows from submerged sheds ongoing. In summary, the Gautam Budh Nagar administration is taking all necessary steps to minimize the impact of the rising Yamuna levels. While the situation remains under constant observation, the current focus is on ensuring the safety of residents and their livestock. As authorities brace for potential floods, the residents of Noida hope for the waters to recede soon.
