A portion of the bridge on National Highway-16 near Rasulpur block of Odisha’s Jajpur district collapsed on Tuesday.
However, no one was hurt in the bridge collapse as there was no traffic on the bridge when it happened in the early hours of the day.
The bridge is built over the Kuakhia River on the highway connecting Chennai and Kolkata
The traffic has been diverted to another bridge on the side of the collapsed bridge to allow vehicles from the opposite direction to pass.
Vehicles coming from both the directions are passing through two single-line bridges, said a police officer.
After getting information, senior officials of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) reached the spot and started investigation.
As per preliminary investigation, the portion of the bridge constructed in 2006-07 collapsed due to structural failure, said JP Verma, project director, NHAI.
Action will be taken according to the findings of the probe, he said, adding, “We will find a way to restore traffic on the bridge.”
Sridhar Das, a local resident said, “After a vehicle passed, the bridge suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident. However, the movement of traffic was disrupted for some time.”
