Omar Abdullah: National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah has made a significant comeback, assuming office as the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah, who served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2014 when Jammu and Kashmir was a full-fledged state, returned to lead after the NC-Congress alliance won the first assembly elections held in the Union Territory post the abrogation of Article 370.
Abdullah shared his excitement on social media, posting photos from his new office along with the caption “I’m back” on X (formerly Twitter). He also updated his X bio to reflect his new role as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar Abdullah Returns as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir After Historic Elections
In a ceremonial oath-taking ceremony held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on Wednesday, Abdullah, along with his selected ministers, was sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The event took place at 11:30 am and marked a historic moment as Abdullah became the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir since its transition to Union Territory status.
The NC-Congress alliance secured a comfortable majority
The NC-Congress alliance secured a comfortable majority, with NC winning 42 seats and Congress winning six out of the 90 seats contested. The coalition has also gained the support of five Independent MLAs-elect and one MLA-elect from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). With these additional allies, the coalition commands a majority in the 95-member assembly, which includes five nominated members by the Lieutenant Governor.
This electoral success reinforces the NC’s influence in the region and highlights the political stability brought about by Abdullah’s leadership in the newly formed Union Territory’s first government.
