Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Suvendu Adhikari, stated on Wednesday that “encounters” should be used by police if needed to protect women in West Bengal.
He went on to say that only someone like Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, could maintain law and order in West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state assembly, further charged that Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, had neglected to protect women and children.
“Female children who haven’t crossed college face atrocities. West Bengal has become a hotbed of killers and only one like UP CM Yogi Adityanath can control the situation,” said Suvendu Adhikari.
“If required, these criminals should be encountered. These criminals don’t have any right to live with humans,” he further added.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Tapas Roy reacting to Suvendu Adhikari’s comments said, “No matter how much Suvendu wants to turn Bengal into Yogi Raj, it will never happen.”
“We want speedy trial and justice for victims of rape cases but through the law. We also want harsh punishment for rapists, but as per law. What does Suvendu mean by encounters? People in West Bengal don’t support this. Does he want the Taliban rule in Bengal?” Tapas Roy added further.
