Opposition INDIA MPs Plan Visit to Strife Torn Manipur Amid Ongoing Violence

Manipur Violence

Manipur Violence: Over the weekend, a group of MPs from the INDIA bloc of parties will visit the violently divided Manipur, opposition lawmakers told Hindustan Times on Thursday. On Saturday and Sunday, the MPs will be in the northeastern state, according to the leaders. Manipur has seen ethnic confrontations between the Meitis and Kukis since the first week of May, and the BJP-led state government has come under scrutiny for failing to put an end to the bloodshed.

Government Faces Criticism for Handling of Manipur Violence

The BJP-led national government has also come under fire for the violence’s persistence and for doing little to overthrow the N Biren Singh government in the state. Meanwhile, Congressman Rahul Gandhi‘s forthcoming trip to Manipur will take place nearly exactly one month to the day after he visited the region (June 29, 30) and spoke with victims and civil society organisations. In a show of protest against the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s persistent silence on the Manipur problem, INDIA members showed up to Parliament on Thursday wearing all-black clothes. The government, on the other hand, reiterated that it was prepared for a conversation and charged the opposition with trying to avoid a discussion.

PM Modi’s Brief Address on Manipur Issue Sparks Controversy

PM Modi has only mentioned the problem once up to this point. He addressed the media before the start of the proceedings on July 20, the opening day of the current monsoon session of Parliament. A Manipur video showing two women being paraded naked and assaulted by a mob leaked a day earlier. On the other hand, the opposition asserts that the PM only spoke for 36 seconds outside the House. They contend that he must consequently provide a thorough statement inside the House. For the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, there are 26 opposition parties in this coalition, including the Congress. The parties have come together to oppose PM Modi and the BJP and stop them from winning a third straight term in power at the federal level.
