Patna News: Wearing a helmet while riding on the road may not guarantee you won’t receive a fine anymore. A recent circular from the Transport Department in Patna, the capital of Bihar, has introduced stricter rules regarding helmets. Helmets will no longer be checked solely based on appearance; instead, they will be inspected for their brand and the presence of the Indian Standard hallmark. If your helmet doesn’t meet these criteria, you may face a fine.
How to avoid traffic challan?
Beginning October 9, to evade helmet fines, it is imperative to don ISI-marked helmets exclusively. The sale of non-standard helmets constitutes a breach of Section 182A (3) of the Motor Vehicles Act, and both the traffic police and the transport department have initiated measures against vendors selling non-standard helmets.
In Patna, two-wheeler riders caught without standard helmets are already being identified through cameras. According to the recent circular, individuals wearing non-standard helmets will now face an immediate fine of ₹ 1000. Additionally, the circular stipulates that the Transport Department’s team will conduct inspections of shopkeepers, imposing a hefty fine of ₹ 100,000 on those found selling non-standard helmets.

Between September 1, 2023, and October 6, 2023, a substantial amount of over Rs 5 crore in fines was levied on 45,481 vehicles, as reported by the SP. This included fines totalling Rs 69,85,000 for 1,301 individuals caught driving in the wrong direction. The largest share of fines, approximately Rs 2,75,00,000, was imposed on roughly 27,515 individuals who were driving without helmets. Additionally, fines of Rs 4,00,000 were imposed on 180 individuals for using mobile phones while driving, Rs 30,40,000 on 1,519 individuals for overspeeding, and Rs 4,96,000 on 496 individuals for not wearing seat belts.
