Patna News: High Court Rejects Petitions, Bihar to Continue With Caste Based Census

Patna News

Patna News: The Bihar caste enumeration restriction has been lifted by the Patna High Court. In its ruling in favour of the Nitish government on Tuesday, August 1, the High Court noted that Bihar would undergo a caste-based census. The Patna High Court placed a temporary halt on May 4. Dinu Kumar, the attorney for the petitioner, stated that we will now contact the Supreme Court. Caste surveys are not authorised by the Bihar government. A total of six petitions requesting the prohibition of caste-based enumeration were submitted. The petitions have all been rejected.

Caste Census Delayed Amidst Privacy Concerns

The Patna High Court had deferred its ruling on the petitions against the Bihar government’s proposal to conduct a caste-based survey in the state on July 7 after hearing thorough arguments for five days. Both the petitioners’ and the Bihar government’s arguments were heard.

High Court’s Verdict Challenges Government’s Authority

The petition claimed that the Bihar government lacked the authority to carry out this study. The administration is breaking the constitution by doing this. Along with a person’s caste, the caste census also collects information about their occupation and educational background. The right to privacy has been violated by this. Tax dollars are also being wasted by spending Rs 500 crore on caste enumeration. The petitioners asked for the caste enumeration to be put on hold. The government’s case was being presented in court by Advocate General PK Shahi. Following the High Court’s stay, the state government first petitioned the High Court for a review before turning to the Supreme Court, but it was unsuccessful in obtaining relief. Following the central government’s rejection, Bihar’s government carried out a caste-based census on its own.
