Manipur Violence: The Manipur High Court in an interim order has asked state authorities to provide limited internet services to the public in certain designated areas, that will be monitored by the state authorities themselves. The decision comes after several petitions, including one in Supreme Court was filed to lift the internet ban in the state. “Taking into consideration the hardship faced by the public, especially with regard to the ongoing admission process of the students in the State, and to enable the public for carrying out their urgent and essential services, the State authorities are directed to provide limited internet service to the public in some designated places under the control of the state authorities,” the order said. The High Court will hear the case again on June 23.
Internet ban after violence erupted
The internet services in the state of Manipur were suspended following violent ethnic clashes broke out between Kukis and Meities. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the violence between Meitei and Kuki communities that broke out on May 3. The violence erupted after a high court decision to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meities. The HC order to uplift ban in designated areas was taken on Friday by Justices Ahanthem Bimol Singh and A Guneshwar Sharma, however the decision was only made known on Tuesday.
