Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in a video message on Saturday announced to change the timings of government offices from existing 9 am – 5 pm to 7:30 am – 2 pm in view of the peak summer season. The timings will come into effect from May 2 and will remain in place till July.
Relief to PSPCL
The chief minister said that new timing will also provide respite to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) by reducing its peak load by 300 to 350 MW.
“People are happy that they will be able to get their work done in government offices before the afternoon heat. The employees will also be free early and will be able to spend time with their family. We have taken the decision after holding discussion. It will be a May Day holiday on May 1, therefore, the timings will come into effect from May 2,” he said.
‘It’s a new idea’
The chief minister said that it’s a new idea and it will benefit in the large run.
“The PSPCL has told us that its peak load is from 1.30 pm to 5 m and theme will help reduce it. This system is followed in the foreign countries like Canada and the US where adequate use of sunlight is made by changing the work hours. It is for the first time that this is being experimented in the country. It is a new idea,” he said.
“Most officers too used to be tied up in their offices but now they will have free time. I too will reach my office at 7:30 am in the morning. I am hopeful that people will benefit from the decision.” he added.
