After the Supreme Court directive on the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal, the Punjab government has called a two-day special session. This decision came after a long time when the Punjab Government decided that it would not build the Syl Canal because the Punjab Government did not have the money to give it to Haryana. On October 4, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Government to inspect the land to be constructed in Punjab and make an estimate of how much construction is required.
Punjab Vidhan Sabha released a statement
Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretariat released a statement regarding this issue and it read, “Under second proviso to Rule 16 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly), the speaker has been pleased to call the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, which was adjourned sine die on 20th June 2023 to meet at 11 am on Friday, 20th October 2023 in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.”
Officials stated the October 20-21 session will be an extension of the current legislative assembly’s fourth session, which was the budget session in March. Because the fourth session has not yet been completed, the governor’s consent is not necessary to summon a sitting of the Assembly, and the assembly speaker is competent to convene it, according to official sources. Other concerns, including the SYL canal, are expected to be tackled during the conference, according to sources.
About SYL canal
The SYL canal was designed to effectively allocate water from the Ravi and Beas rivers. The proposal called for a 214-kilometre canal, 122 kilometres of which would be built in Punjab and the remaining 92 kilometres in Haryana. Haryana has completed the project in its jurisdiction, while Punjab, which began building in 1982, has since shelved it. It remains to be seen how the Raj Bhavan would react to the AAP government’s proposal for a session.
