Punjab’s Excise Department on Sunday checked and monitored bars under the newly launched ‘Night Sweep’ operation. The drive was conducted to check if the bar owners are complying with the rules at the bars, pubs, and restaurants in the major cities of Mohali, Jalandhar, and Amritsar.
‘Night Sweep’ to keep strict vigilance on bars
Harpal Singh Cheema, the Excise and Taxation minister said that the drive was launched to check the smoking of Hookhs and other illegal activities that the government has banned. “More than 13 teas swung into action under the supervision of financial commissioner, Taxation Vikas Partap, and excise commissioner Varun Roojam,” the minister said.
Action against owners of a bar
He further informed that Mohali district’s Nayagaon area was found to be violating the laws as it sold hookahs and beer meant to be sold in Chandigarh only.
The officers confiscated 20 hookahs, and 7 bottles of various and various tobacco flavors. As a result, a case has been registered against the owners of the restaurants under various provisions of The Punjab Excise Act 1914, The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003, Poison Act 1919, and Indian Penal Code 1860 at Police Station.
“Similarly, a bar in Jalandhar was found operating beyond permitted time limit. Three bottles of expired beer were also found which were confiscated. Due to these violations, strict penal action against the bar has been initiated under relevant provisions of the law”, he added.
