Punjab News: Today is the 116th birth anniversary of Shivram Hari Rajguru, one of the brave revolutionaries whose legacy continued at the forefront in India’s freedom struggle. He was born on August 24, 1908, in Ratnagiri, now a district in the state of Maharashtra. As such, Rajguru has remained an immortal symbol of courage and sacrifice with fellow martyrs Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev.
A Glimpse into the Life of a Revolutionary
Rajguru was one of India’s leading freedom fighters, better known as Hari Shivaram Rajguru. The young lad from Pune moved to Varanasi to continue his education, which he did until he met other revolutionaries. He walked to Varanasi on foot, and that six-day walk became a symbol of his dedication and determination in itself.
It was in Varanasi that Rajguru met Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev, which laid the foundation for a friendship leading to some vital activities against the oppression of the British. One of their acts is the killing of a British police officer, J.P. Saunders, at Lahore in 1928, which was a turning point in the freedom struggle.
The fearless spirit and commitment to the cause of Independence for India from Rajguru were evident throughout his life. He was just 23 when he was hanged in Lahore Central Jail on March 23, 1931, along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev. It was the greatest sacrifice regarding their patriotism toward the nation and their determination.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Tribute to Rajguru
Tributes were paid to the revolutionist leader on his special day by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He took to the social media platform X and paid his tribute, stating that inspiration continues to be drawn from the bravery of Rajguru and his pivotal role in the struggle for freedom. Mann said, “Tribute to great Patriot, Revolutionary warrior Shaheed Shivaram Rajguru on his birth anniversary. The spirit of patriotism of these great martyrs, who have played a vital role in the struggle for independence of India against the rule of the British, is always an inspiration for us.”
The impact of Rajguru is beyond his revolutionary acts. There exists a shopping complex named Rajguru Market in 1953 in Hisar, Haryana, which reminds one of his strong impact. Only natural that, just as much Shivram Rajguru’s anniversary of birth is remembered, so also is his unparalleled bravery and the mark left in history regarding India. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire generations, teaching all of us a lesson about the price paid for freedom and the valor of those who fought for it.
