Punjab News: Gurdwara Dispute Turns Deadly! Cop Loses Life in Two Nihang Sikh Group Clash

Punjab News

Punjab News: In a startling incident, a group of Nihan Sikhs opened fire on a police team over ownership of a gurudwara, causing chaos at a gurdwara in Punjab‘s Kapurthala and injuring three other police officers. As a group of Nihang Sikhs fought with police over the divisive matter of gurdwara ownership, chaos broke out.

Arrests Follow Gurudwara Invasion

Reports confirm that ten members of the Nihang sect have been arrested as authorities deal with the fallout. The arrests are related to the purported invasion of the gurdwara property, but the situation is still unstable because Punjab Police has recently increased its presence there. When one of the Nihangs opened fire on the police while they were trying to clear the disputed area, the conflict turned deadly.

Police Account of the Tragedy

Tejbir Singh Hundal, the Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) of Kapurthala, disclosed that the sad event transpired when the police were standing on the road when the Nihangs opened fire. Senior officials have rushed to the scene in response to the growing violence, and a significant police presence is being deployed in an attempt to bring peace back to the volatile area. The problem still exists, though, as there are rumoured to be about thirty Nihangs inside the gurdwara.

Historical Roots

The founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 is the origin of the Nihang, an illustrious order of Sikh warriors. The Nihangs are easily recognised thanks to their characteristic blue robes, turbans, and traditional weapons like swords and spears. Over time, they have come to represent Sikh martial prowess.

History of Conflict

The violent altercation between the Nihang sect and outside parties is not new. A police officer’s hand was famously severed by Nihang protesters in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown in Patiala, illustrating the potential for conflict when law enforcement and this fiercely independent Sikh order collide. Authorities in Kapurthala are exerting great effort to put an end to the disturbances and prosecute those accountable for the unfortunate incidents as they transpire.
