Punjab: Several injured in blast near Golden Temple, police rules out terror attack

As many as five to six people have reportedly sustained injuries following an explosion at the heritage street near the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Saturday night. Locals and devotees were left panic-stricken assuming it could be a terror attack. However, police maintained that the blast could be an accident and not any terror incident.

Situation under control: Police

The police authorities have asked locals and devotees to maintain peace, assuring them the situation was under control and there was no need to panic. A police official also told the media that the blast took place at a chimney of a restaurant. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mehtab Singh, said the cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained. 

“A news related to blasts in #Amritsar is going viral on social media, and the situation is under control Investigation is on to establish the facts of the incident and there is no need to panic. Urge citizens to maintain peace & harmony, advise all to fact check before sharing,” a tweet by the Commissioner of Police Amritsar said. 

Investigation underway 

A forensic team had arrived in Punjab to conduct an investigation. They found some powder close to a damaged window. 

Approximately six girls riding in an autorickshaw were hit by glass shards. They have suffered minor injuries, said locals.
