Chandigarh to turn green? Bans Non-Electric Two-Wheeler registrations from THIS date

Chandigarh

Chandigarh: In an effort to promote green transportation, the Administration of Chandigarh has announced a ban on the registration of non-electric two-wheelers, starting from the beginning of 2024. The registration process for non-EV two-wheelers for the financial year 2023 has also been halted as of February 10th. This decision aligns with the administration’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2022, which was announced in September of last year and sets minimum achievable goals for the registration of electric vehicles each year.

Policy aims for a healthier environment

The authorities stated, “The policy aims at encouraging electric mobility and discouraging non-electric vehicles in the interest of healthier environment. In order to encourage electric vehicles, waiver on road tax on electric and hybrid vehicles has been envisaged in the policy. Simultaneously, in order to limit and discourage non-electric vehicles, provision for capping on their registration has been made in the policy.”

According to the policy, the first-year target for electric two-wheelers was set at 35%, which was surpassed when 65% of fuel-powered two-wheelers were registered this year. As a result, the administration has announced that no further registration of non-EV two-wheelers will be accepted.

Continuing further, it said, “Since the registration of non-electric two-wheelers has already been achieved for the current financial year, their registration is required to be immediately stopped in order to implement the provisions of EV Policy and in the interest of greener Chandigarh.”

Target for the upcoming years

The policy sets a series of targets for electric vehicles in the coming years, with the goal of reaching 100% registration of e-two-wheelers and e-three-wheelers by the fifth year. Similarly, personal e-cars are targeted to reach 50% by 2026, while the aim for e-buses is 100% by the fifth year.

The Administration of Chandigarh is committed to its goal of promoting eco-friendly transportation and is taking bold steps towards achieving this goal through its EV Policy 2022.
