In a significant move, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has entered into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with British Council Education India Pvt. Limited (BCEIPL) to create new employment opportunities for the youth.
The MoU was signed by Director of Higher Education, Dr. Amarpal Singh, representing the Government of Punjab, and Duncan Wilson, Managing Director of BCEIPL. The signing ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Education Minister Harjot Singh, and Deputy High Commissioner of the UK, Chandigarh, Caroline Rowett.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann congratulated the Higher Education department for the MoU, calling it a momentous day in the state’s history. The agreement aims to introduce a training course called “English for Work” in Government Colleges under the Higher Education Department. This course is envisioned to enhance the employability skills of Punjab’s youth, facilitating their placement in the industrial and services sectors.
Moreover, the Chief Minister believes that this initiative will encourage the youth to remain in India and contribute to Punjab’s socio-economic growth, thereby reversing the trend of brain drain from the state. As part of the project, students will be taught English for Employability Skills, a blended course that emphasizes English language learning in practical work-like scenarios. It focuses on all language skills, including Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, while also emphasizing Grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
The pilot project will be launched in Government Colleges for 5000 students starting from the Academic Session of 2023-24
The English for Work course will be an online blended learning program, utilizing a ‘flipped classroom’ approach that combines self-study flexibility with interactive live classes. The Chief Minister expressed hope that students would develop and enhance their English skills, enabling them to communicate confidently in professional settings.
Furthermore, the course will include both a pre-assessment test to gauge the students’ proficiency level and a post-assessment upon completion. Students who complete the course successfully will be awarded a certificate.
