Dr. Ratan Singh Jaggi, a well-known scholar in the field of literature and education, will be conferred with the Padma Shri award. The list of Padma awardees has been released on the eve of Republic Day. The only name from Punjab in the list is that of Dr. Ratan Singh Jaggi.
Doctor Jaggi is a very eminent scholar of Punjabi and Hindi and especially Gurmat literature. He has dedicated more than 70 years of his life in the service of literature.
In the year 1962, he did his PhD in Puranic studies of Dasam Granth from Panjab University, Chandigarh. In the year 1973, Dr Ratan Singh Jaggi obtained his D.Litt degree from Magadh University (Bodhagaya) in which his subject in Hindi was Sri Guru Nanak – Personality, Krititva and Chintan. This book was awarded the first prize by the Department of Languages. Dr. Jaggi also wrote many books on Shri Guru Nanak Vani.
On the occasion of the 550th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a book titled Guru Nanak Vani-Path and Explanation was prepared and distributed by Dr. Jaggi in Punjabi and Hindi on behalf of the Punjab Government.
A special achievement of Dr. Jaggi was that he translated Ramcharit Manas into Punjabi. Seeing the need of an encyclopedia to answer the questions related to Sri Guru Granth Sahib, in the year 2002, Dr. Jaggi wrote Sri Guru Granth Encyclopedia in a concise form. It was published by the Punjabi University of Patiala. In the literary world, he was awarded the Honorary D-Lit degree by Punjabi University in the year 2014.
