After a prolonged delay of more than six years, the civil terminal at Ludhiana’s upcoming international airport in Halwara is poised to become operational by March 31, 2024. This airport, championed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and slated to be named after Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, aims to start with an interim terminal designed to handle a single domestic flight at a time, accommodating up to 300 passengers.
Infrastructure Progress: The Ludhiana international airport project involves transforming the Indian Air Force (IAF) station at Halwara into an international civil airport. The interim terminal, nearly 95% complete, spans 2000 sqm and includes a new apron for the landing of planes. The initial infrastructure is tailored for an Airbus A321 and will facilitate 150 arrivals and 150 departures.
Upcoming Milestones: While the interim terminal nears completion, the IAF is actively engaged in the re-carpeting of the runway. Amardeep Nehra, Assistant General Manager of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), emphasized that the focus is on meeting the March 31 deadline for the interim civil terminal, with future plans to expand the runway and commence work on the main international airport building.
