Approval has been received from Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana to run Metro in Mohali-Panchkula and Chandigarh on Thursday, a high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Banwarilal Purohit, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal, Punjab Minister Anmol Gagan Mann, Chief Secretaries of both the states and others. In this everyone approved to run Metro in Tricity. Although Haryana has given several suggestions regarding the metro station, while Punjab has asked for a week’s time.
Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has prepared a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) to end the increasing traffic jams in Tricity including Chandigarh. In this, many suggestions have been given including running metro, making flyover-underpasses at many places, many km cycle track, many bus stands, multilevel parking. Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana gave in-principle approval to this report on Thursday.
According to the report, Metro in Tricity is to be completed in two phases and all other works in three phases. The total cost of Metro is proposed to be Rs 7680 crore but after Haryana’s suggestion many metro stations will increase. This will also increase the cost of the metro project. However, implementing all the suggestions of RITES would cost the central government, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana around Rs 10,570 crore. In this, 60 percent money will be given by the Center and 40 percent by Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana.
Haryana CM suggested to connect Chandigarh and Zirakpur with Pinjore-Kalka
Many suggestions were given by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal in the meeting regarding the metro station. He said that Pinjore-Kalka should be connected to Chandigarh and Zirakpur and this should be included in the first phase. Along with this, important places like Punjab-Haryana Secretariat, Legislative Assembly, High Court, Airport should be connected with Metro in the first phase itself.
It has also been suggested in the meeting to make a route from Housing Board Chowk to Panjab University and PGI as thousands of people go to PGI daily for their work. Apart from this, it was suggested to include the areas of Ghaggar river and new Panchkula in the expansion of Metro and to make an alternative route of Metro to improve the connectivity of the airport.
