Haryana and Punjab received 40 per cent more rainfall than the average in July, while Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, received 170 per cent more rain.
The Meteorological Department here said that Haryana received 59 per cent excess rainfall while Punjab received 44 per cent excess rainfall in July. Several parts of both the states were in the grip of floods recently.
An official of the Meteorological Department told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, received 170 per cent excess rainfall in July.
He said that the normal rainfall during this period is 273.2 mm, but Chandigarh received 738.7 mm of rain. The city also recorded the highest ever rainfall of 302.2 mm in a 24-hour period in July 2023.
According to the official, Haryana received 237.1 mm of rainfall against the average of 149.1 mm in July, which is 59 per cent more. During this period, Punjab received 231.8 mm of rainfall as against the average of 161.4 mm, which is 44 per cent more.
According to the Meteorological Department data, no district in Haryana recorded less rainfall in July and Panchkula and Yamunanagar districts received maximum rainfall.
Panchkula received 681.1 mm of rain during this period, which is 111 per cent more than normal. Similarly, Yamunanagar received 681.1 mm of rain, which is 75 per cent more than normal.
Ambala recorded 75 per cent excess rainfall, while Kurukshetra recorded 276 per cent excess rainfall. Other districts in Haryana that received excess rainfall in July include Panipat (98 per cent), Karnal (97 per cent), Kaithal (92 per cent) and Gurugram (24 per cent).
According to the data, Ferozepur in Punjab received 165 per cent excess rainfall, while Faridkot received 256.2 mm and Mohali 472.6 mm. Patiala and Rupnagar recorded 71 per cent and 107 per cent excess rainfall, respectively. Whereas, Tarn Taran and Jalandhar received 151 per cent and 34 per cent excess rainfall respectively in July.
An official of the Meteorological Department said that during this period less rain was also recorded in some districts of Punjab. Barnala received 29 per cent less rainfall at 86.6 mm against the normal of 122.1 mm, while Fazilka and Muktsar received 58 per cent and 60 per cent less rain, respectively.
Last month’s floods in several parts of Punjab and Haryana killed more than 80 people and caused extensive damage to crops and property.
