Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu came out of Patiala Central Jail on Saturday after serving his sentence in the 1988 road rage death case. After coming out of Patiala jail, Navjot Sidhu targeted the central government and said that democracy is shackled, institutions have become slaves. Whenever dictatorship came, revolution happened and today I say that the name of revolution is Rahul Gandhi. On the release of cricketer-turned-politician Sidhu, many Congress leaders and supporters gathered outside the jail on Saturday to welcome him and raised slogans of Navjot Sidhu Zindabad.
To welcome 59-year-old Sidhu, his supporters standing outside the jail had also arranged for drummers.
Coming out of jail, Sidhu said, I consider the Constitution as my book. The institutions which were the strength of the constitution, the same institutions have become slaves today. I am not afraid, I am not afraid of death because whatever I do, I am doing it for the next generation of Punjab. There is no such thing as democracy as of now. A conspiracy is being hatched to bring President’s rule in Punjab, minorities are being targeted. If there is an attempt to weaken Punjab, it will become weak.
Sidhu son Karan Sidhu said on Saturday that the entire family is eagerly waiting for his father’s release from jail. Karan said that the last few times have been very difficult for his family, but now he is happy to see his father being released from jail. To welcome Navjot Sidhu, supporters have put up his posters and hoardings at many places in Patiala city. A supporter standing outside the jail said that party workers are very happy about Sidhu’s release.
The sentence was done in the case of 1988
Sidhu was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case. Gurnam Singh, an elderly man of 65 years was killed in this incident. Sidhu, the former chief of the Punjab unit of the Congress, surrendered in a Patiala court, after which he was sent to jail on May 20 last year.
The Supreme Court sentenced him to one year’s rigorous imprisonment. The Supreme Court had said in its order that any leniency shown for lesser punishment would further damage the justice system and adversely affect public confidence in the effectiveness of the law. Sidhu’s lawyer HPS Verma had told that due to the good behavior of Navjot Sidhu during jail, his release is being done ahead of time, as is allowed under the rules.
