Bhagwant Mann: In response to the security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state in January of last year, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has initiated “disciplinary procedures for substantial penalty” against former DGP S Chattopadhyaya and two other police personnel.
Punjab chief minister has made the decision to ask several other senior police officers
Together with Chattopadhyaya, Inderbir Singh, the former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police for the Ferozepur range, and Harmandeep Singh Hans, the former senior superintendent of police (SSP) for Ferozepur, will also face significant punishment procedures. The Punjab chief minister has also made the decision to ask several other senior police officers to provide justifications for why action should not be taken against them as suggested in the report of the probe committee established by the Supreme Court.
A protester roadblock in Ferozepur
On January 5, 2022, a protester roadblock in Ferozepur caused PM Modi’s convoy to become stuck on a flyover, and he later left without going to any events, including a rally. Many state personnel were indicted for failing to follow procedures by the committee that investigated the security failure during PM Modi’s visit. Infractions by officials could result in suspension, downgrading, or, in the worst case scenario, termination of those still employed. Prior to the Punjab assembly elections, there was a security breech that sparked a significant political uproar.
