Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the revision of the voter list for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections, starting from October 21. The move is aimed at reducing political interference in the SGPC and promoting cleaner gurdwara politics. The revised voter list will also include the names of new voters.

Mann expressed the importance of holding democratically elected SGPC elections

CM Mann expressed the importance of holding democratically elected SGPC elections, highlighting concerns about an interim body currently running the affairs of the Sikh body and the pre-scripted decisions made by the Akali leadership.

While discussing the announcement, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson, Malwinder Singh Kang, clarified that the elections are conducted by the Gurdwara Election Commission and stated that the AAP would neither participate in the elections nor interfere in religious matters. The primary goal is to address political interference in gurdwara politics and cleanse the SGPC, which, according to Kang, has become a personal fiefdom of the Badal family.

In response to CM Mann’s statement, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesperson, Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, criticized the CM for commenting on the SGPC elections. He argued that the Gurdwara Election Commission had already issued instructions for the elections on May 25 and that the commission is competent to oversee the process. Dr. Cheema emphasized that the CM should refrain from interfering in the election process and allow the administration to carry out its duties independently.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami echoed similar sentiments, urging the CM to let the administration conduct the electoral rolls revision independently. The revision of the voter list aims to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process for the SGPC.
