In response to an alleged defamation case brought by a former Moga MLA, Dr. Harjot Kamal, the Moga court of chief judicial magistrate Preeti Sukhija has issued an order summoning Punjab Finance Minister and AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema.
Although the order was given out on Friday, a written copy wasn’t made public until Sunday.
A “prima facie case under Sections 499, 500 of the IPC is made out against the accused,” the order states. “The accused is ordered to be summoned to face trial under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC.”
Cheema was sent a summons by the court on November 15.
Before the Punjab assembly elections earlier this year, Kamal, a former Moga MLA for the Congress who switched to the BJP, filed a complaint alleging that Cheema had “unnecessarily dragged” his name in the alleged land purchase scam of route number 105-B. Additionally, Kamal claimed that Cheema had told the media that two payments of Rs 350 crore and Rs 360 crore each had been made to his (Kamal’s) Axis Bank, Ajitwal (Moga), account “without having any proof.”

“Ajitwal, I don’t have any bank accounts in Axis Bank. Furthermore, there isn’t an Axis Bank branch in Ajitwal, Kamal claimed in his complaint.
“Since the Government of India/Punjab government has so far not fixed the rate of acquisition of land of the area for said purpose, so the question of disbursement of any amount and any money transaction in this regard does not arise,” stated Kamal’s plea in the court against Cheema.
